As one of the UK’s largest equine welfare charities, Bransby Horses are open to visitors all year round providing fun ways to learn about the work they do.
Entry is free and there is a café, playground and plenty of opportunities around the farm to meet their rescued horses, ponies and donkeys.
And the fun doesn’t end there – you can keep in touch after you leave, through the charity’s Sponsorship Star scheme.
How to Sponsor a Pony
For £3 a month there are a number of horses, ponies and donkeys which can be sponsored, which means you will receive regular updates on their progress at the charity.
New to the scheme are Selene and Frazzle.
These wonderful ponies were part of two harrowing rescue missions involving Bransby Horses and will be in the care of the charity for the remainder of their lives.
Not only can supporters sponsor them for less than a cup of coffee, they can also meet them face to face, for free, when they visit.
Frazzle
Is an eight year old cob who was born in April, 2014. He arrived from the RSPCA when he was only two years old and he was very thin with a body condition score of 2.5, (a healthy horse would score between three and four).
His feet were overgrown and he was showing signs of pain so they desperately needed attention. It was later discovered that Frazzle had floating bone fragments in his feet which was causing him discomfort.
He was a nervous but inquisitive horse on his arrival to Bransby Horses but with some patience he soon began to gain trust and now Frazzle loves people and is affectionately known as “The Labracob” because he so enjoys human interaction. He would stand all day to be groomed and fussed if he could.
In preparation for his introduction as a Sponsorship Star, Frazzle had a photo shoot, which was a little challenging as he became very suspicious of a pram before the shoot had even started.
He definitely won’t be getting next top model!
Selene
The royal of Bransby Horses and known as ‘Selene the Queen’, Selene is a 13 year old, cob, piebald (black and white) mare who was heavily in foal when she arrived.
When Selene arrived at Bransby Horses she gave birth shortly after to a beautiful colt (uncastrated male) called Quinn. She is a sweet, quiet mare who has become confident within herself since her arrival.
Although she suffers from asthma, Selene doesn’t let it stop her enjoying herself. She has been living on Main Yard at Bransby Horses with her friend, Joules for nearly two years and is very settled in her routine.
Joules and Selene are the best of friends and enjoy each other’s company.
Because of her life before arriving at Bransby Horses, Selene requires reassurance from her handlers but, she often greets them with pricked ears and a little nicker (a noise horses make to greet herd members).
