Celebrating Lincoln’s legacy: First citywide history festival this weekend!

A festival celebrating our historic city is set to launch in May, promising to be fun for the entire family!

Taking place 4-6 May 2024, the Lincoln Festival of History will allow visitors to enjoy a captivating journey through the ages.

This city-wide celebration of history and heritage will transport visitors and residents alike to pivotal moments in Lincoln’s past.

The festival will be split into zones across the city, allowing visitors to step back in time to explore different time periods.

COLOSSUEUM QUARTER – CASTLE SQUARE

In Castle Square, you will find a Roman encampment within the Colosseum Quarter.

This area will include living history displays where you can see a blacksmith, baker, tiler, decorator, carpenter, weaving, pottery, and play authentic Roman games.

As part of this zone, visitors can also immerse themselves in pop-up Gladiator performances in the ‘arena’ at St Paul in the Bail!

VIKING MINT ZONE – CORNHILL SQUARE

In the Viking Mint zone in Cornhill Square, visitors can join the workers and make their own pewter replica coin and colour in their own shield. Cheer on the Vikings during their pop-up battle sequences throughout the day.

The Viking Mint will also include living history displays including calligraphy, games, armoury and jewellery making.

Within City Square, visitors can expect the Discovery Zone: Realm of the Relics, where they can hunt for treasures in archaeological pits, as well as have a go at medieval axe throwing.

Also experience thrilling historical reenactments at Lincoln Castle, engage with living history and captivating tales at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life and delve into the exciting treasures of the Lincoln Museum.

Outside Lincoln Cathedral, visitors can meet Lincoln Longwool Sheep, a heritage breed of great national importance. As well as meeting this special Lincoln breed, people can also try their hand at weaving their own wool.

Visitors can also expect further zone announcements celebrating different time periods in the city, as well as further activity from organisations across the city, including Lincoln Cathedral and University of Lincoln.
